Frequently Asked QuestionsCan I talk to you before deciding to try counselling ?
Yes I would be happy to talk with you about your particular situation and needs. Please call on 01773 823059 or click here to email me
How long and frequent are the sessions ?
Sessions last 1 hour and take place weekly, usually at the same time each week. Following the intitial appointment, if you decide that our working together would be beneficial, we arrange a suitable time for these regular, weekly sessions.
How many sessions will I need ?
This is very variable and is something that we will discuss in the initial consultation when we look together at what has brought you to counselling. If you wish to do a piece of brief focussed work on a specific area of your life, six weeks is a good guideline and then we can look at whether further sessions would be helpful. No pressure would be exerted on you to continue further.
You may want to do longer term work - perhaps your difficulties are difficult to identify or you would like to do some exploratory work. I am also happy to work with you in an open-ended way.
At any point during our work together I welcome discussion of your thoughts and feelings about the duration of sessions.
Is it completely confidential ?
Yes, our work together is completely confidential and I will not talk to anyone about our work unless you wish me to do so. If I become aware that you were in danger of harming yourself or another person, or that children or vulnerable adults are at risk of abuse, then I would have to communicate this to someone else. I would make every effort to consult with you before speaking with others. All of my records are held securely and without identifying information. When I discuss cases during my professional supervision, identifying information is not included. The supervision process is also carried out according to strict standards of confidentiality.
What happens if I cancel a session or miss an appointment?
After a counselling contract has been agreed and any holidays or other previously arranged commitments are checked, I do charge for missed or cancelled appointments. The appointment time is your space of time and I do not see other clients in the event of a cancellation. If you feel that counselling is not helping, it is much more beneficial to come and talk about that rather than miss appointments and,if you wish to stop, to have a constructive, thoughtful ending,
